Caledonia's Fall Calendar Meets the M-37 Work Zone Before Its Winter Shift

Over the next two and a half weeks, Caledonia has early voting, Election Day, Halloween night in the village, a library closure and two craft shows on back-to-back days. All of it falls inside the last stretch of the M-37 lane setup the Village of Caledonia said would run "through mid-November." Caledonia Township Hall at 8196 Broadmoor Avenue SE is where most of the civic traffic goes, and it sits inside the corridor MDOT is rebuilding.

The Busiest Address on the Calendar Is on Broadmoor

Early voting for the November 3 General Election started Saturday, October 24, at Township Hall. Starting Thursday, October 29, four days remain. The Township's early voting notice lists these hours:

Day Date Early voting hours
Thursday October 29 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Friday October 30 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Saturday October 31 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Sunday November 1 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Township adds a warning to the bottom of the schedule. Township Clerk Joni Henry's notice, posted September 15, says:

Please be aware of the construction impacts/delays surrounding 8196 Broadmoor Avenue SE and plan your route accordingly.

The same notice says the canvass of the Early Voting Center will happen at 8:00 p.m. on November 3 at the hall. The Township phone number on the notice is (616) 891-0070, and it's the place to call with questions about the site.

Broadmoor Avenue and M-37 are the same road through town. The MDOT project page describes a $50 million rebuild of 2.7 miles of M-37/Broadmoor through Caledonia Township and the village. The project runs Spring 2026 through Fall 2027 and covers a four-lane boulevard, Michigan lefts, new signals at 76th, 84th and 92nd streets, and a multi-use path at 84th Street. The Township manager's June report put the official start at May 18.

What the Road Looks Like Right Now

The Village's June 1 lane closure notice described the current stage as one lane open in each direction between 76th and 92nd streets, expected to last "through mid-November," weather permitting. It also listed southbound closures from Kraft Avenue to 76th and northbound closures from near Main Street to 92nd.

Later updates have mostly confirmed that timeline. Village Council minutes from August 10 record the "M-37 project is still ongoing, traffic shift/lane closure until November." By the September 14 meeting, the update was simply that the project "is moving along."

So the early voting days, Halloween and the craft show weekend all fall in what should be the last weeks of the single-lane setup that has held since early summer. Lane setups shift during a job like this, and MDOT's project page sends travelers to Mi Drive for live closures. Check it the morning of any trip that crosses the corridor.

October 30 and 31 Put Everything on Two Days

Friday and Saturday are the busiest days on the calendar. Here's how they stack up:

  • Friday, October 30, 10 to 11 a.m.: Not-So-Scary Storytime at the Kent District Library Caledonia Township Branch, 6260 92nd St. SE. Costumes are welcome.
  • Friday, October 30, 1 to 6 p.m.: Deep Roots Produce holds its free 2026 Trunk or Treat at 8410 Whitneyville Ave. SE in Alto. The farm says it expanded the hours to help with traffic and lines.
  • Friday, October 30, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Early voting at Township Hall.
  • Saturday, October 31, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.: Early voting at Township Hall.
  • Saturday, October 31, 6 to 8 p.m.: The Village of Caledonia's town-wide trick-or-treating.

If you'd like a Halloween warm-up before the weekend, the library's Eerie Excitement at the Library runs this Thursday, October 29, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., with games, crafts and activities for all ages.

On Saturday, early voting closes at 3:30 p.m. and trick-or-treating starts at 6. That leaves a gap of two and a half hours between the day's biggest civic event on Broadmoor and its biggest community event in the village.

Election Day Comes With a Library Closure

Tuesday, November 3, is the General Election. It's also a full-day closure at the KDL Caledonia Township Branch, which the library's calendar lists as a Staff Training Day. Anyone planning to pick up holds, use the computers or study there that day will need another day or another KDL branch.

The branch's regular November programs run on either side of the closure:

  • Monday, November 2, 10 a.m.: Toddler Time
  • Wednesday, November 4, 1 p.m.: The Novel Characters Book Club discusses Project Hail Mary
  • Thursday, November 5, 5:30 p.m.: Pocket Monster Club
  • Friday, November 6, 3:30 p.m.: Teen Zone, Retro Wii Play
  • Tuesday, November 10, 1 p.m.: Homeschool Hangout
  • Thursday, November 12, 5:30 p.m.: Generations in the Making, Bricks at the Library

Storytime runs at 10 a.m. on November 4, 6, 11 and 13. The full list is on the branch's event calendar.

The Craft Show Weekend, November 7 and 8

The first weekend after the election has two craft shows, one each day.

Caledonia Arts and Crafts Show, Saturday, November 7, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The 2026 exhibitor application lists the show at 9757 Duncan Lake Rd. Exhibitor checks go to the Caledonia Resource Center at 9757 Kraft Ave., and the organizer's phone number is 616-891-8117. The form uses two street names with the same house number, so call that number before heading out to confirm the door.

Caledonia Lions Craft and Vendor Show, Sunday, November 8, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The listing on 92.9 The Grand puts it at the Caledonia Lions Community Center, 100 Haddington St. It lists more than 50 local vendors selling handmade goods, gifts and seasonal treats, plus a penny raffle that supports the Caledonia Lions. Entry is free.

Both shows fall in that last stretch before mid-November. For anyone driving in from the M-37 side of the township, the advice from the Township's voting notice applies here too.

What MDOT Has Planned for Winter

After this stage wraps up, MDOT's open house displays lay out the Winter 2026-2027 setup. The plan opens the new boulevard to traffic from south of 92nd Street to north of 84th Street. From north of 84th to north of 76th, traffic stays on the new east side of M-37, and residential and commercial driveways in that stretch keep their access from existing M-37.

That is MDOT's plan as published, not a confirmed switch date. The displays don't name the day traffic moves. For Spring and Summer 2027, the plan keeps traffic on the new east side between 84th and 76th while crews build the west side of that segment. MDOT's February project announcement targets completion in mid-September 2027.

Business owners along the corridor were looking past the construction before work started. In WOOD TV8's March report, Paradise Pizza owner Travis Wisner-Todd said he thought the project would help his business more than hurt it, and he described the evening backup from 76th Street as bad. Comodo Motors owner Jordan Baker told the station that corridor users had already been turning off to other routes because of congestion. When FOX 17 covered the start of tree clearing and utility work, MDOT's John Richard said the added capacity would help both local and through traffic.

The Village's next big event on the calendar is Saturday, December 5, when it has scheduled Christmas in Caledonia, beginning at 4 p.m. Whether the 84th-to-92nd boulevard section is open by then depends on when MDOT makes the winter shift, so check Mi Drive before that trip as well.
