When thinking of purchasing a home, many questions arise in one’s mind: what school district do I want to live in?, how many bedrooms will I need?, would I like a ranch or two story?, etc… But the first step in buying a home in Grand Rapids or anywhere isn’t about location or design or aesthetics. It’s about price.
Determining how much you can spend is the first, and possibly most important, decision when you’re looking to purchase a home. In order to do this, you’ll have to meet with a lender to go over your current financial situation. Typically, it only takes about 15-30 minutes to get pre-qualified or pre-approved. There are a variety of lenders out there- it’s important to do your homework when deciding who to talk to in order to get the best rates and service available. Discussing this with your Realtor may be helpful, as they can share their experiences with you. It’s also a good idea to talk to more than one company about your loan to get a look at the best rates and options available.
Doing so will allow you, the home buyer, to know exactly how much you can spend towards buying your new home. It also allows the Realtor you’re working with to know that you are serious about purchasing and what price range to search. Another benefit is that when you do find that dream home you’ve been looking for, you will already have a pre-qualification letter to send in along with your offer so the sellers know you’re financially set to purchase the home.
