Moving to a New Home in West Michigan

Whether you’re moving to Grand Rapids from another state or you’re moving to Rockford after selling your home in Caledonia, certain steps should be taken to assure a smooth move.

One Month Before: Research moving companies for rates and reviews. Besides their price, it’s important to check out a moving company’s reputation. There are many different moving companies in West Michigan to help you move from one home to another. Several sites like www.yelp.com and www.yellowpages.com offer ratings for companies based on customer experiences.  It’s also important to keep in mind that sometimes, due to a variety of reasons, closings can be moved, so be sure to check with the moving company to see if there is a rescheduling or cancellation fee.

Two Weeks Before: Touch base with your Realtor and lender to see if your closing is still on track. Start packing what items you can- seasonal items and clothing, things in storage, etc…

One Week Before: Confirm with your Realtor about closing date and location. Contact moving company make sure they have your reservation. Start labeling furniture and boxes for where they will go in the new house, or if a box is heavy or fragile. Pack as much as you can throughout the next week.

One Day Before: Pack a suitcase with clothes and toiletries so everything else, the “non-essentials”, can be packed. Make sure you have plenty of food and water set aside for any pets, and snacks and toys for kids. Confirm with your Realtor what amount is needed to bring to closing.

Day Of Move: Before closing, head to the bank to get your certified funds. Closings typically take about an hour or so. After you’ve signed all the paperwork and have the keys to your new place, pack up your car with what you can and load up the moving truck if you haven’t already. Be courteous to the new occupants of your “old place” and make sure the home is nice and clean. Once you’re at your new house, unload your belongings and start making it Home.
